SCIENCE EXPLORATION OF EROSION

Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.

First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)

Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.

You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.

Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in.
erosion sediment meander canyon delta
river basin deposition slope dam lake

Last week our grade did two science experiments. The first experiment was on flat land. Mrs. Greenslade built a small mountain out of dirt, sand, leaves, rocks and sticks. Then she took a hose and let water run on top of the mountain. After a few minutes we saw the mountain wash a way. That is could erosion. Then we saw the stream meander or curve as went down the path. After a wile we started to see canyons form on the side of the mountain. This means that the water was making a path with deep sides. At the end of the stream we saw a fan shape area of sediment called a delta. All along the bottom of the river we saw deposition of earth materials. The experiment was a good way for us to see erosion.

Four our next experiment we went to the top of the hill where there was a bigger slope. First she made a another pile of dirt. Then she asked us to get in a grope to get sticks and twigs. Then we put are sticks and twigs on the path to make a dam to stop the water from going through. Then she turned the hose on. After the hose was on for a while we stared to see that the some of the dames kept the river from coming through which caused a small lake to form. After a wile the water drained into the bowl shape area could a basin. That day was the best science class that we have had so fare.
